Synthesis science brings together diverse datasets, conceptual frameworks, theories, and analytical approaches across disciplines and scales to address compelling scientific questions that no single study can resolve. Through open, collaborative, and data-intensive research, it transforms existing knowledge into new mechanistic insights, generalizable explanations, predictive models, and avenues for future inquiry. Synthesis science at NSCORE will:
- Address long-standing questions about how organisms persist and adapt — questions that require evidence spanning many labs, systems, and scales.
- Leverage existing information, extracting new value from data already collected rather than generating new primary data.
- Connect evidence across disciplines, systems, and spatial and temporal scales.
- Be driven by fundamental questions and theory, not by data availability.
- Advance through multidisciplinary team science.
- Produce transparent, reusable data, methods, models, and other research products.
